Anonymous- what are some of the more helpful lettering instructional books you work from? ones that just help you develop and understand form and the construction of letterforms? even if they are basic or elementary . . . fundamentals, ya know?
My main source of reference is usually photos I take in old book stores. The lettering and typesetting are absolutely incredible and you don’t really need any type of instruction when that kind of inspiration is right there in front of you.
However, that’s not to say I don’t use some fundamental-type books. There are two I hold very close to my heart: “ABC of Lettering” by Carl Homes and “Speedball Textbook for Pen and Brush Lettering.” They’re fairly simple overall, but the style of lettering in both books are just insanely amazing. If you can find them, get them.
I also have a handful of calligraphy books from the early 60s through early 80s that were passed down from my mother and grandmother. They’re both excellent artists and naturals with lettering, so whatever they show me is usually better than anything I could ever produce.
