Every job is different, but if you find yourself getting too involved with details and not knowing when to stop then you need to consider two things:

Will these perfect details really make this illustration better?
Is it worth my time to keep working on this instead of wrapping it up and starting something new.

If you can answer yes to both, then time means nothing. If you answer no to one or both, then either wrap it up and move on or start it over and get into a better groove.
