Your work fantastic! I'm curious, can you recommend any resources for studying similar forms of lettering from a historical point of view? Any archives of vintage signage that you use for inspiration?
The best advice I can give is this: Get acquainted with your local antique stores and try to understand why things were made the way they were. Don’t just look at the aesthetics, look at the purpose. It will come a lot easier that way.
When did you first start designing? What has been the strongest motivator in your work?
I’ve been designing forever, but if we’re talking professionally then technically in 1997 (on and off freelance), and full time in 2001. I’ve always wanted to be the best at whatever path I chose, and since becoming the best is something that takes a lifetime, I have a constant motivator always pushing me to learn more and get better.
I don't have any questions I guess, besides how are things in New York? I just wanted to let you know how awesome those Faulkner books are and that I'll be ordering one of those when I get back to New York.

Ladies and gentleman: my cousin! Follow his lead and grab some of those Faulkner books!
I'm a huge fan of your work, and what I find most appealing , next to your hand rendered imagery, is your amazing use of texture. Where/how do you create those things?
I’ve had this question asked a lot actually. I’ve actually learned through trial and error how to accomplish certain types of textures. It’s actually a little complicated, but I’ve gotten quick at it. It actually involves a lot of erasing once I ink, then some experimentation with scanner settings, then adjustments of the levels in Photoshop. My best advice is to just try different things until you find a method that works for you.
Jon! I saw one of your pieces on Rue Mag. Congrats! I would love to order a few prints of your work. Im a Graphic Designer in Austin TX and a collector of awesome design work. When will you be adding more work to your shop? Thanks and keep up the great design. you inspire us all! Kasey
I will hopefully be adding more prints to the shop soon, but it’s usually the last to get any love. A new site will be coming out soon, so hopefully I can dedicate more time to the shop!
